SPPI, with its Local Economy Development Program (LEDP), believes that poverty eradication lies in the development of local economies. SPPI takes the stand for the marginalized sectors of the community, most especially for the poorest of the poor. Development projects have been put in place, helping over a thousand households throughout Northern Samar.
Our current projects are the following: 1. Seaweeds Value Chain Development SPPI provides capital to seaweed farmers to get them started with their farm modules. Seaweed Farming Production (nursery and grow-out) and Marketing Protocols have also been developed to systematize the production process. SPPI facilitates the marketing of the dried seaweeds produced by the farmers. 2. Root crops and Vegetables Trainings on organic farming and production of organic fertilizers are being conducted to provide the farmers with sustainable farming technologies. The farmers are gradually working towards their community’s self-sufficiency in root crops and vegetables production. 3. Food-processing Trainings on food-processing have resulted to the production of salabat (ginger tea), tocino, longganisa, salted eggs, and mikin (a local delicacy made from cassava) of women members of people’s organizations. 4. Basura to Pera Because of projects on ecological sustainability, solid waste management is now being observed in most baranggays where SPPI is involved. In line with this, recycling projects have been developed such as Basura to Pera. Used plastic bags are gathered, sanitized, and crocheted into bags, envelops, and cell phone cases by the women members of SPPI’s partner people’s organization. 5. Disaster Risk Reduction Management SPPI has partnered with other non-government organizations in advocating for support for the National DRRM Law, framework and plan, especially at the local level. 6. Organizational Development SPPI assists in the registration of its partner people’s organizations at the Securities and Exchange Commission and at the Department of Labor and Employment. Trainings on leadership, project management, savings mobilization, and gender sensitivity are also conducted to help develop and sustain the people’s organizations. |
